The experimentation continues in Space Dolly R

After minigame 27, the next step in this design experiment was adding graphics to the minigames, using photosprites by Suzie Doll. You can see some test footage from that process in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTwV6hZXmLNkZ562Sb37q2xbDnMm6Le8e

We reached two conclusions from that process:

  • Suzie Doll's approach to graphics isn't well-suited for games full of small, rectangular, uniformly aligned sprites.
  • Our limited development time is better spent on one well-polished game concept than many unpolished ones.

After we reached those conclusions, we made Bullet Darkroom, a simpler game designed around showcasing some of Suzie's photography. Bullet Darkroom didn't use many ideas from Untextured Minigame Project.

Now, we've made Space Dolly R, a mouse-controlled shooter inspired by Space Harrier and other similar games. It doesn't contain any source code or assets from Untextured Minigame Project, and it doesn't use the rewinding mechanic, but it does apply lessons we learned. You might notice some especially close resemblances to minigame 13. Play Space Dolly R at https://goodbunnystudio.itch.io/spacedollyr
